New building
Building vessels has traditionally been Fosen Yard’s main undertaking since it was established in 1918 – from year 2000 to 2013, Fosen Yard built 19 vessel, primarily large passenger ferries and offshore vessels. However, with the collapse of the offshore market and ever lower newbuilding prices from Asia and Turkey, we shifted our focus towards larger retrofits and conversions, mainly on RoPax and Aquaculture vessels..
Nevertheless, for a shipyard, new ships are always interesting and the market is again changing, where we see owners coming back to Northern European yards to build their vessels, tired of endless delays and varying quality from yards outside Europe. The trend is actually so positive, that Fosen has leased facilities at one of the most versatile yards in Europe – Volkswerft in Stralsund – which has a production hall of 300 x 108 x 74 m and one of the world’s largest ship lifts, measuring 270 x 35 m, with a lifting capacity of 25,000 tons!
